Our fascinating passage wasn’t even possible before the opening of the Main – Danube Canal in 1992. Straddling the Franconian Alps, this truly major feat in modern engineering negotiates sixteen locks and traverses the highest point of any European Waterway to forge the link between the Rivers Main and Danube. Our journey from the twinkling Danube to the romantic Rhine cuts through two major German wine-making regions; Franconia in northern Bavaria and the middle Rhine Valley, the region claimed to be the embodiment of German romanticism. Historic and museum towns litter our route. All bear testament to their weighty historic pasts, both ancient and modern, with many raised again as a phoenix from their World War II assaults. This is truly a voyage offering great cultural and scenic diversity. From sausages to pretzels; Rauchbier to Rieslings; there’s something for every taste!
