Armistice River Cruise with Sir Max Hastings Itinerary

This commemorative itinerary, running on the centenary of the end of the First World War, which will take you to some of the war’s most poignant sites. Starting in Amsterdam, and then sailing into Belgium on the MS Serenity, this journey will underline the importance of remembering the fallen. From the siege of Antwerp, to Passchendaele, Ypres and the Menin Gate, there will be many opportunities to reflect on the First World War. During the cruise you will be joined by Sir Max Hastings, the former editor of The Daily Telegraph and a noted military historian. You will also be accompanied by guides from the Royal British Legion, a charity we are proud to say is endorsing this trip and to whom a donation will be made from each booking.

Day 1: UK – Amsterdam
We travel to Amsterdam, the vibrant capital of the Netherlands, and enjoy a relaxing evening onboard our ship.

Day 2: Amsterdam - Antwerp
This morning we cruise to Antwerp, arriving around lunchtime. You will be able to learn about the Siege of Antwerp which took place in late September and early October in 1914. On the evening of 27 September the Germans launched an artillery bombardment in the southern sector of the outer ring of forts which protected the city of Antwerp. You are then free to explore the city at leisure. The Grote Markt is a great place to while away time, admiring the many guildhalls and the centrepiece fountain, and there are many more striking buildings which remind visitors of the city’s heyday in the 16th century.

Day 3: Antwerp - Ghent
A leisurely morning with free time in Antwerp before we set sail to Ghent, the fairy tale city filled with medieval buildings, monuments and canals which breathes history, but is also brimming with culture and modern city life. Ghent will be our base for the next three nights.

Day 4: Ghent
Todays included excursion will take you Passchendaele, a small village north east of Ypres. Here you will visit The Memorial Museum Passchendaele which tells the story of the war in the Ypres Salient with special emphasis on the Battle of Passchendaele 1917, one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War and known as the Battle of Mud. We will then pay our respects at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in the world before we travel to Poperinge to see Talbot House, where thousands of British soldiers passed through the doors and was a place where rank was left at the door. This evening there will be a drinks reception before our gala dinner with Sir Max Hastings.

Day 5: Ghent
After a late brunch, Sir Max Hastings will join our included excursion takes you to Ypres where we will visit St Georges Church. The church was built as a memorial to British and Commonwealth troops who lost their lives in the Great War and still holds services to this day. Whilst in Ypres there will be time for you to view the Menin Gate, where the names of 54,896 missing soldiers are engraved, at your leisure before we congregate for refreshments and a second talk from Sir Max Hastings prior to participating in the Last Post Ceremony which is held at 2000hrs each evening. We will return to the ship late evening where there will be a light supper on board the ship available.

Day 6: Ghent - Antwerp
This morning we will commemorate the signing of the Armistice by the Allies and Germany to mark the end of the First World War. At 1100 we will mark the event with a Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance where we will be able to remember those who lost their lives in conflicts around the world. After lunch we set off for Antwerp.

Day 7: Antwerp
We bid farewell to the captain and his crew after breakfast and set off on the return journey.

• As we approach the centenary of the end of the First World War, Sir Max Hastings, the former editor of the Daily Telegraph and a noted military historian, will join the group in Ghent. He will touch on why the stories of First World War veterans should still be heard widely today, and discuss the dying months of the war.

• One of the bloodiest battles of the First World War, the Battle of Passchendaele became known as the battle of the mud. You will visit the Memorial Museum in the village, which tells the story of this particularly brutal phase of the conflict.

• At 8pm, on the eve of the Armistice Day centenary, you will join fellow guests at the Menin Gate for a sounding of the Last Post.

• One of the stops on this itinerary will be Antwerp in Belgium, where you will discover more about life for the citizens of the city during the war. The city was besieged by the German army in 1914, and fell under German control in October of that year.

• You will be accompanied throughout by guides from the Royal British Legion. Highly experienced and knowledgeable, they are dedicated historians who will help bring your journey to life with their extensive knowledge of the campaigns and events – and offer context to the circumstances in which so many made the ultimate sacrifice.

•  Exactly 100 years after the Armistice signalling the end of conflict on the Western Front, there will be a service led by the Royal British Legion held for all those who join the tour.
