Bavaria & the Romantic Rhine Itinerary

Explore the romantic Rhine and Bavaria in 2017 with a short trip from The River Cruise Line. You will glide through the breath-taking Rhine and Main rivers, which lead you through the heart of Europe and reveal the beautiful sights and fascinating history of Germany.

We start in Cologne before cruising through the mysterious Rhine Gorge, where medieval castles stand tall on either side of the riverbank. As you witness the striking scenery you will also learn about the folklore and myths surrounding the Lorelei Rock.

You will also have the option to experience additional tour excursions, such as the cities of Frankfurt, Wertheim Castle, and Nuremberg. To discovermore about our rivercruise around Bavaria & the Rhine, you can read the full itinerarybelow.

Day 1: UK – Cologne (Coach, Rail & Air)
We travel by coach, air or rail to Cologne, one of the main cities along the Rhine which is set around its beautiful gothic cathedral. Here we join our ship and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Day 2: Cologne – Koblenz
This afternoon we reach the walled city of Koblenz. You are free to explore the cosy lanes and atmospheric squares or join our optional excursion for a scenic drive through the beautiful Lahndal to visit the quaint city of Bad Ems. The remainder of the day is spent in Koblenz.

Day 3: Koblenz – Rüdesheim
Relax on the Sun Deck as we cruise through the dramatic Rhine gorge, a section of the river recognised as a World Heritage Site. We pass the legendary Lorelei Rock, which soars 120 metres above the river, and stop at the quaint wine town of Rüdesheim. Here you can enjoy many highlights on our optional excursion, including a cable car ride for panoramic views across the Rhine Valley.

Day 4: Rüdesheim – Frankfurt
Today we join the Main river and stop at Frankfurt, a cosmopolitan city with one of the most striking skylines in all of Germany. Join our optional city tour which takes you to Römerberg, the central square. Later today you can relax on board as we continue along the Main towards Wertheim.

Day 5: Wertheim
The town of Wertheim is well known for its wine, castle and medieval centre. After lunch you can step ashore to explore the narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses or join our optional excursion, which takes you by road train to visit the beautiful stone castle overlooking the valley.

Day 6: Würzburg
Würzburg was once the centre of the Kingdom of Franconia and the home of powerful prince bishops for centuries. Today it is a wonderful place to visit, renowned for the Residence Palace – one of the finest pieces of baroque art in the world. After our visit we continue cruising along the Main towards Bamberg.

Day 7: Bamberg
We reach Bamberg around midday. Built on seven hills, it boasts the most intact centre in Germany with the old town listed as a World Heritage Site. In the evening we begin cruising along the Main-Danube Canal towards Nuremberg.

Day 8: Nuremberg (Rail) – Cologne (coach) - UK (Air)
Nuremberg is Bavaria’s second largest city after Munich. The majority of the city walls still stand and inside you can enjoy a wonderful atmosphere, which combines medieval and modern life in an area filled with gothic churches, aristocratic houses, fountains, memorials and romantic corners, all dominated by the Kaiser Castle. Join our optional city tour to see the highlights before we check in at our hotel – those travelling by rail stay in Nuremberg and those travelling by coach are taken to Cologne and those travelling by air depart in the morning for the return to the UK.

Day 9: Nuremberg (Rail) / Cologne (Coach) – UK
We set off this morning by rail or coach for the return journey to the UK.
