The Blue Danube – Vienna, Bratislava & Budapest

Step aboard the MS Serenity and discover the delights of the Danube as you sail through some of the most beautiful parts of Europe. You’ll see why Budapest is known as the ‘pearl of the Danube’ and the elegant capital of Vienna are so popular as you take in all of the highlight’s they have to offer including the Hungarian Parliament Building, lavishly set upon the river embankment and more. The Wachau Valley offers scenery not to be missed, with plenty of history and culture en route. It’s a part of the world with forgotten beauty, and it’s time to explore it. Join us as we pass through the perfectly gothic cities set upon Europe’s second longest river.

Day 1: UK – Munich (Rail)
We travel by rail to our overnight hotel.

Day 2: Munich – Vienna (Rail) / UK – Vienna (Air)
After breakfast we travel by train and board the MS Serenity in Vienna, the home of Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is known for its Habsburgs’ summer residence Schönbrunn palace. Those travelling by air join today.

Day 3: Vienna
We spend a full day experiencing the delights of Vienna. Grand palaces, baroque castles, magnificent squares and striking monuments are just some of the key features of this beautiful city, which is a world heritage site. In the morning you can join our optional city tour and in the afternoon we have an optional excursion to Schönbrunn Palace, which takes you on a journey through time as we explore some of the 1,441 rooms. We set sail and cruise towards Linz this evening.

Day 4: Linz – Melk
An afternoon arrival in Linz allows us time to explore the city. The must see-sights; the old town has charming cobbled streets and centuries of architecture and on the other side of the river is a modern affair. Relax on the sun deck as we sail to Melk after lunch.

Day 5: Melk - Bratislava
Melk is a small town which lies in the beautiful Wachau valley. Here you can join our optional excursion visiting the Benedictine Abbey. This is one of the most famous monastic houses in Austria and has been occupied by monks for over 900 years. After lunch watch the scenery glide by as we cruise to Bratislava.

Day 6: Bratislava – Budapest
We wake up this morning in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This historic city is dominated by its castle, set high above the Danube and once a frontier post of the Roman empire. There’s also the unique suspension bridge, another key landmark which was announced as the building of the century when it opened in 1972. Join our optional excursion by miniature train to Bratislava castle with free time to explore the castle and the old town. We cruise to Budapest this afternoon.

Day 7: Budapest
Today we have a full day in Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Here you can explore both sides of Hungary’s capital – traditional Buda and the more cosmopolitan Pest. Start the day by joining our optional city tour which introduces you to the highlights and helps you get your bearings in the city known as the ‘pearl of the Danube’. After lunch you can join our second optional excursion of the day, which takes you through the sweeping plains of Hungary to Lajosmizse. Here we visit a traditional stud farm and enjoy a tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching a spectacular live Puszta horse show.

Day 8: Esztergom
We arrive early this morning in Esztergom, one of the oldest towns in Hungary. Here you can join our optional excursion to Esztergom Basillica, the third largest church in Europe. Enjoy another relaxing afternoon cruising to Vienna.

Day 9: Vienna
We bid farewell to our captain and crew and disembark our ship for the return journey home.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see inside the luxurious interiors of Schönbrunn Palace and explore some of the 1,441 rooms which are filled with magnificent chandeliers, beautiful ceiling frescoes and lashings of gold decoration. Highlights include the Great Gallery, the Chinese Cabinets and Emperor Franz Joseph’s private suite.

Discover one of the world’s most famous monastic sites – Melk Abbey. Our guided tour shows you highlights such as the magnificent Marble Hall, Emperor’s Gallery and Abbey Church. There is also free time to explore the grounds and the gardens.


Bratislava castle & train


We are taken by miniature train to Bratislava Castle, set on the hill above the old town, which dominates the city. Free time is given to explore this magnificent castle before further free time allows you to explore the charming squares, courtyards and narrow lanes of this Slovakian capital. The old town is filled with all the must-see sites and is a pedestrian zone which makes exploring on foot a safe and relaxing activity.


Budapest city tour


Accompanied by a local guide, we discover the architectural gem of Budapest. Our coach city tour takes in some of the most beautiful areas, including Heroes Square, which is home to the iconic statue complex of the Millennium Memorial.

Join us as we travel through the sweeping plains of Hungary to the town of Lajosmizse, where we visit a traditional stud farm. We take a tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching human skill and horse power come together in a spectacular live show, performed in an open air arena.
