Budapest & Vienna Cruise on the Danube Itinerary

Step aboard our stylish ship in the architectural paradise of Budapest, Hungary’s capital, and enjoy lazy summer days on the water, together with plenty of time for exploring. Discover some of Europe’s greatest sights that are cradled by the Blue Danube, on this leisurely cruise which reaches as far as Germany, with Slovakian and Austrian treasures in-between. Wander the pretty cobbled streets of Dürnstein and Passau, gaze at the flawless beauty of the Wachau Valley, lose yourself in the baroque wonderland that is Bratislava and delve into the timeless heart of classical music – Vienna. It’s a rare and wonderful opportunity to re-discover the luxury of time amidst incredible views.

Day 1: UK – Munich
We journey aboard Eurostar from St Pancras International to Brussels and continue by high speed rail to Munich, where we check into our overnight hotel.

Day 2: Munich – Budapest
After breakfast we continue our rail journey to Budapest, capital of Hungary, and join our ship on the Danube for a relaxing evening. Those travelling by air join today.

Day 3: Budapest – Esztergom
This morning you can join our optional Budapest City Tour, which introduces you to some of the most prominent highlights of the city known as the Pearl of the Danube. These include the 700 year old Matthias Church, Parliament building – a magnificent example of neo-gothic architecture, and Buda Castle, which rises 48 metres above the river. In the early afternoon we set sail and cruise towards Esztergom, where you can see Hungary’s largest church which also boasts the world’s largest altar-piece, before we cruise towards Bratislava.

Day 4: Bratislava
Today we wake up in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This historic city is dominated by its castle, once a frontier post of the Roman Empire. There’s also the unique suspension bridge, another key landmark which was announced as the building of the century when it opened in 1972. Join our optional walking tour to take in the main sights and experience the rich culture in and around the old town before our ship cruises towards Dürnstein.

Day 5: Dürnstein
The town of Dürnstein is crowned by the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart. Join our optional walking tour which takes you around the cobbled streets to admire the pretty courtyards and buildings, before stopping at one of the Wachau Valley’s renowned wine cellars to enjoy some wine tasting. In the mid-afternoon we set off and cruise towards Passau.

Day 6: Passau
Passau is known as ‘The Three Rivers City’ due to its unique location where the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers meet. Join our optional walking tour around the old town, which is a stunning display of Italian baroque style architecture. This is where most of the sights are found, including the Cathedral of St Steven, home to the world’s largest cathedral organ. High above the town is the Veste Oberhaus Castle in the north and the Pilgrimage Church in the south. There’s plenty of time to admire the sights before we cruise towards Melk.

Day 7: Melk – Vienna
Our cruise route takes us over the border into Austria to reach the city of Melk. The town square has many attractive buildings, surrounded by cobblestone streets, and nearby there is the notable Schallaburg Castle. It is also overlooked by one of the best known and most splendid monastic houses in Austria – the Benedictine Abbey, which you can visit on our optional excursion. In the afternoon we cruise through a section of the river known as the Wachau Valley, which stretches 24 miles through stunning scenery, with many charming towns, terraced vineyards, castles and monasteries. We reach the Austrian capital of Vienna in the evening and berth overnight.

Day 8: Vienna
This morning you can join our optional excursion which takes you into Vienna for a city tour. More than 150 grand palaces, over 27 baroque castles, impressive squares and striking monuments are just some of the key features of this magnificent city, whose historic centre is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the mid-afternoon we start cruising towards Budapest.

Day 9: Budapest – Munich
This morning we bid farewell to our Captain and his crew and travel by rail to Munich for our overnight stay. Those travelling by air take their return flight from Budapest Airport.

Day 10: Munich – UK
We set off this morning for our return rail journey to the UK.
