Rhône & Saône Cruise through Burgundy & Provence

Winding through the sun-kissed vineyards of Burgundy and the lavender scented countryside of Provence, this relaxing cruise reveals a melting pot of scenery and culture made easily accessible by the MS Thurgau Rhône, a brand new premier ship. When you’re not enjoying life on the water, with the professional crew taking care of everything, you can step ashore to explore our ports of call or join a variety of optional excursions that ensure you get the most out of your cruise experience: follow one of the most scenic wine routes in France, explore the world capital of gastronomy, enter the walls of the magical kingdom known as the ‘city of the popes’, discover the wild beauty of the Camargue as we go in search of white horses and pink flamingos – there is so much to see along the banks of these fabled rivers.

Day 1: London – Lyon
We travel to Lyon and board our ship for a relaxing evening, as we begin cruising along the Saône river towards Mâcon.

Day 2: Mâcon
Today you have the option of joining our optional excursion, which visits Cluny, once known as the spiritual centre of Europe. We the great abbey church Cluny III, one of the largest Christian churches in Europe. We return to the ship in Mâcon and cruise to Collonges where we spend the evening in port.

Day 3: Lyon
After breakfast we arrive in Lyon, where the Sâone and Rhône rivers join. You can join an optional city tour to see the main sights of this beautiful destination; these include the old town with its narrow alleyways, courtyards and lively quays. In the afternoon we cruise towards Viviers.

Day 4: Viviers
We reach the town of Viviers where you can join an optional city tour excursion. Viviers is one of the oldest cities in the Rhône-Alpes region and its cathedral dominates the skyline. The town is split into two half’s the lower half for traders and artists and the upper town for the wealthy citizens and the clergy. We return to the ship and sail towards Arles.

Day 5: Arles
Our morning optional excursion takes you around Arles. This quaint little city is widely regarded as the heart of Provence and was where Vincent van Gogh produced some of his most famous paintings. After lunch you can join another optional excursion which takes you by coach through the vast and beautiful Camargue nature reserve in search of the iconic wildlife, which includes white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos.

Day 6: Avignon
This morning we reach Avignon. This graceful city is best known for the Palais des Papes, the largest gothic palace in the world where Pope Clement V took up permanent residence in the 14th century. The city walls are accessed by one of seven doors, which lead you into a beautiful web of papal architecture, charming streets and attractive courtyards. You can spend your time here at leisure or join an optional city tour to ensure you miss none of the highlights. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on board as we cruise towards Tournon.

Day 7: Tournon
We reach the town of Tournon where you can join an optional excursion to see the spectacular Ardèche gorges by train, hailed as the Grand Canyon of Europe with cliffs towering up to 1,000 feet above the meandering river. The most striking feature is the Pont d’Arc, a natural stone arch standing over 200 feet high with a span of 110 feet. We return to our ship, where the afternoon is free to relax onboard as we cruise back to Lyon.

Day 8: Lyon – London
After breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts and set off on the return journey to London.
