Cruising the Rhône & Saône through Burgundy & Provence

Winding through the sun-kissed vineyards of Burgundy and the lavender scented countryside of Provence, this relaxing cruise reveals an abundance of scenery and culture easily accessible by the MS Van Gogh II. When you’re not enjoying life on the water, with the professional crew taking care of everything, you can step ashore to explore our ports of call or join a variety of optional excursions that ensure you get the most out of your cruise experience: follow one of the most scenic wine routes in France, enter the walls of the magical kingdom known as the ‘city of the popes’ or discover the wild beauty of the Camargue as we go in search of white horses and pink flamingos – there is so much waiting to be discovered on this wonderful cruise.

Day 1: UK – Chalon Sur Saône – Mâcon
We travel to Dijon, where we are transferred by coach to Chalon Sur Saône to board our ship. After settling into your cabin, you’ll meet the crew and enjoy a welcome cocktail. This evening, we set sail and cruise along the Saône river towards Mâcon.

Day 2: Mâcon – Beaujolais – Lyon
This morning you have the opportunity to join our optional excursion to the Beaujolais vineyards. En route we journey through some of France’s prettiest wine-growing villages before reaching Romanèche-Thorins for a visit to the ‘Hameau Duboeuf ‘, a unique museum containing a collection of old and rare objects from over 2000 years of wine-growing history, where we'll learn about the current wine-making and vine-growing processes. In the midst of the Beaujolais vineyards, we will discover the skills of the winemakers and enjoy a tasting of some of the region's wines before returning to our ship. Enjoy a relaxing evening on board as we cruise through Lyon by night and admire the city lights.

Day 3: Lyon – Tain-l'Hermitage
After breakfast you can take advantage of our optional excursion to Lyon, where the Sâone and Rhône rivers join. Here we will discover the Fourvière Basilica where you can stop and admire the breathtaking views over the city. We then continue to Lyon's Old Town for a guided walking tour to explore the ‘traboules’, hidden passageways unique to the city of Lyon. Enjoy some free time in the Saint Jean district in the heart of the Old Town before we return to the ship for lunch. Relax onboard this afternoon as we cruise towards Tain-l'Hermitage, where we arrive this evening.

Day 4: Tain-l'Hermitage – The Ardeche – Avignon
Enjoy a morning at leisure as we cruise towards The Ardeche. This afternoon you can join our optional excursion to the Pont d'Arc Cavern, the largest decorated cave replica in the world. The nearby enormous Chauvet Cave houses the original collections of cave paintings, reproduced painstakingly by engineers and artists. In the midst of the stalagmites and stalactites, you will discover the world as it was seen by men and women 36,000 years ago and witness where the first artists in the history of humanity painted their masterpieces. This evening we set sail to Avignon.

Day 5: Avignon – Arles
The graceful city of Avignon is best known for the Palais des Papes, the largest gothic palace in the world where Pope Clement V took up permanent residence in the 14th century. The city walls are accessed by one of seven doors, which lead you into a beautiful web of papal architecture, charming streets and attractive courtyards. You can spend your time here at leisure or join an optional city tour to ensure you miss none of the highlights. Later today we return to our ship and set sail for Arles, where on arrival you will have some free time to discover the old part of this quaint city, widely regarded as the heart of Provence.

Day 6: Arles – The Camargue – Martigues
This morning you can join another optional excursion which takes you by coach for a panoramic tour through the vast and beautiful Camargue nature reserve in search of the iconic wildlife, which includes white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos. We’ll also visit a manade (bull breeding farm) and learn about the work of a manadier, as they demonstrate their skills. Our visit will also include a cocktail on the patio. We return to the ship in Arles for our final night onboard. This evening we cruise towards Martigues and enjoy a delicious gala dinner.
