Treasures along the Danube from the Black Sea

Now is the perfect time to explore the heart of Europe, and what better way to do so than by sailing along its second longest river whilst aboard the MS Serenity? You’ll experience a seamless blend of charming scenery and flourishing cities on your journey from the Black Sea. By the end of this cruise, you’ll have ticked off six countries from your bucket list and discovered the hidden gems of each city you visit, all with the help of our experienced Cruise Manager. Join us to explore the streets of Budapest and Vienna, Bratislava and Belgrade – we promise it’s a cruise you won’t forget.

Day 1: UK – Bucharest, Romania
We fly to Bucharest and are transferred by coach to Giurgui where we board our ship and set sail to Cernavoda.

Day 2: Cenavoda & the Black Sea
Early this morning we arrive in the Romanian city of Cernavoda, where our included excursion takes you to the Black Sea. We visit Constanta, the main port city of Romania, and take a city tour including photo stops at Ovidius Square, the Great Mahmudiye Mosque, the St Peter & Paul Orthodox Cathedral (1885), the casino and the Genoese lighthouse. You can also visit the famous Roman mosaic. We then continue by coach to Mamaia, the most famous seaside resort in Romania, where we enjoy a delicious lunch along with the chance to paddle in the Black Sea. We sail overnight to Ruse.

Day 3: Ruse, Bulgaria
After breakfast our ship docks in Ruse, the fifth largest city in Bulgaria, you can join our optional excursion which will take you to the Romanian capital of Bucharest, where there’s plenty of time to explore the wide tree-lined boulevards and admire many landmarks including Parliament Palace – the second largest building in the world after the US Pentagon, the Arch of Triumph and the beautiful Romanian Atheneum. After our excursion we return to the ship in Turnu Magurele and the ship sets sail for an evening of cruising.

Day 4: Eisernes Tor, the Iron Gate Gorge
Enjoy a full day cruising through the breathtaking scenery of Eisernes Tor, the Iron Gate – the largest river gorge in Europe which carves a channel through the Carpathian Mountains. The views are spectacular, with the Derdap national park on the southern side of the Danube in Serbia and the Portile de Fier Nature Park on the northern side in Romania. It’s a fantastic day to spend relaxing on the sun deck.

Day 5: Belgrade, Serbia
The city of Belgrade lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. There is plenty of time to see the highlights of this Serbian capital. You can start by joining our optional city tour, which is a great way to see the main sights including the huge Belgrade Fortress and St Sava Church, one of the biggest churches in the world. Later this evening we cruise towards Hungary.

Day 6: Mohacs, Hungary
Today you can enjoy our optional excursion to Pécs – home to the world famous Zsolnay ceramics and the largest Turkish ruins in Hungary. We cruise this evening towards Budapest.

Day 7: Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Join our optional tour to see the highlights of both sides of the city – traditional Buda and the more cosmopolitan Pest. See the fairy tale towers of Fishermans Bastion before having some free time to explore this amazing city. After lunch join our optional excursion to Puszta, a vast prairie where we visit a traditional ranch and tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching a spectacular live horse show.

Day 8: Bratislava, Slovakia
We reach Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This historic city is dominated by its castle, set high above the Danube and once a frontier post of the Roman Empire. There’s also the unique suspension bridge, another key landmark which was announced as the building of the century when it opened in 1972. Join our optional excursion by miniature train to Bratislava castle with free time to explore the castle and the old town. This evening we cruise towards Vienna.

Day 9: Vienna, Austria
Experience the delights of Vienna, capital of Austria. Grand palaces, baroque castles, magnificent squares and striking monuments are just some of the key features of this beautiful city, which is a world heritage site. Our first optional excursion is a city tour of Vienna followed by free time. After lunch join our second optional excursion of the day to visit the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, a former imperial summer residence.

Day 10: Vienna – UK
We bid farewell to our captain and crew after breakfast and set off on the return journey.

Our Black Sea coach excursion visits Constanta, where we enjoy a city tour with various photo stops, before continuing on to Mamaia, where you can enjoy a delicious lunch along with the chance to paddle in the Black Sea.


Pecs City Tour


Home to the world-famous Zsolnay ceramics and the largest Turkish ruins in Hungary, Pécs is a city of art and history. See the Gazi Kasim Mosque in the middle of the main square, the barbican and the cathedral, and wander along Király and Káptalan Street. Pécs is also a city of love, with couples from around the world visiting Janus Pannonius Street, where they place a padlock on the street railings to symbolise their lasting love for each other.

We travel through the sweeping plains of Hungary to Lajosmizse, where we visit a traditional stud farm. We take a tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching a spectacular live show performed in an open air arena.


Budapest city tour


Accompanied by a local guide, we discover the architectural gem of Budapest. Our coach city tour takes in some of the most beautiful areas, including Heroes Square, which is home to the iconic statue complex of the Millennium Memorial.


Bratislava train & Castle


We are taken by miniature train to Bratislava Castle, set on the hill above the old town, which dominates the city. Free time is given to explore this magnificent castle before further free time allows you to explore the charming squares, courtyards and narrow lanes of this Slovakian capital. The old town is filled with all the must-see sites and is a pedestrian zone which makes exploring on foot a safe and relaxing activity.
